We’ve got choices when it comes to social media. Imagine the possibilities of connecting and engaging with all types of audience through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Tumblr, StumbleUpon, Reddit and more. Are you confused already?

Yes there are lots of platforms to choose from but how do you start and how do you play the game like the gurus?

Here are 4 tips for social media focus and engagement:

One: Less is more
We only have 24 hours in a day. You can’t possibly be good in everything or be in all social media platforms. I believe less is more. To start, focus on just two platforms. For Starr Host, we focus on Facebook Business Page and Twitter. Both platforms have more audience than the rest. However many business owners find success in other platforms as well.

The most important is to start with at least one or two right away.

Two: Stick around
If you have chosen Facebook and Twitter make sure you have people you can hang around with. Which means you need to add Twitter followers and add more people to like your Facebook page.

You may start out with 100 followers on Twitter. If you stick around for a few months and continuously add your following, soon you will definitely increase your followers. Here is one example from one of our client, Don and Jane Clair of Clair Care Center. They started Twitter on November 5. As of November 6 in less than 24 hours, they have 37 followers.

The three-month projection would be around 2,000-3,000 highly targeted followers on Twitter.

Three: Tweet and post everyday
Posting and tweeting everyday is important for your social media platforms. Imagine having a house full of people who do not communicate with each other? Or absent family members who come home occasionally? That’s how your Twitter and Facebook page would look like without regular posts and tweets.

Remember to like posts, retweet tweets from followers and give encouraging comments. Join in the conversation with your social media friends.

Four: Put a plan together
William A. Ward said “Four steps to achievement: Plan purposefully. Prepare prayerfully. Proceed positively. Pursue persistently.” Check your monthly social media progress by reading the metrics on a monthly basis. Learn as much as possible about how to optimize your business using the social media you have chosen. If you do not have the time to learn, hire a social media expert to help you out. Be professional and real not perfect when you start out with social media.

It is quite impossible to have time for every single social media platforms available or have all the knowledge about Facebook or Twitter. When you devote your time and focus on just two at a time, you will be able make the most out of your time and money investments into your social media presence.
